The 1,000 Hours Outside Family Challenge (2026)

A simple, joyful challenge to help families unplug, reconnect, and get outside — one hour at a time.

By Britney Berkery January 1, 2026

Spending time outdoors isn’t just fun — it’s powerful. Research shows outdoor play supports kids’ physical health, emotional regulation, creativity, and focus. That’s why families across the country are embracing the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge: a goal to spend 1,000 hours outdoors in one year.

Don’t worry — this isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress, presence, and play.

What Is the 1,000 Hours Outside Challenge?

The goal is simple:

Spend 1,000 hours outside between January 1 and December 31.

That breaks down to:

    •    ~2.7 hours per day

    •    ~19 hours per week

    •    ~83 hours per month

And yes — backyards, porches, sidewalks, parks, and beaches all count.

What Counts as “Outside”?

✔️ Playing in the yard

✔️ Walking the dog

✔️ Playground time

✔️ Riding bikes or scooters

✔️ Nature walks or hikes

✔️ Beach days

✔️ Picnics

✔️ Gardening

✔️ Watching clouds, bugs, or birds

✔️ Reading or doing homework outdoors

If you’re outside and off screens — it counts.

How to Use the 1,000 Hours Outside Tracker

That beautiful tree tracker isn’t just cute — it’s motivating!

How families can use it:

    •    Color in a leaf or section for every hour spent outside

    •    Use different colors for each child

    •    Track as a family total or per child

    •    Hang it on the fridge or family command center

    •    Celebrate milestones (100 hours, 250 hours, halfway!)

Easy Ways to Get Started (No Planning Required)

    •    Eat one meal outside each day

    •    Take a 20-minute after-dinner walk

    •    Let kids play outside while you drink coffee

    •    Choose outdoor playdates

    •    Park farther away and walk

    •    Visit a local park once a week

Small habits add up fast.
